Woodworking Guide
Safe use of the Shed’s woodworking equipment
The woodworking area is the heart of the Shed — table saws, band saws, routers, planers, thicknessers, lathes, and more. Each machine requires a specific induction before use. Inductions are run by accredited supervisors on open days. Members are encouraged to start with simpler hand tools and work up to powered equipment as their confidence grows. Always check the blade guard is in place and never work alone on a major machine.

Table Saw
Induction required. Always use the blade guard and riving knife. Never reach over a running blade. Stand to the side, not directly behind the work.
🔧
Router & Router Table
Induction required. Always feed against the direction of rotation. Keep hands clear of the bit and use push sticks where appropriate.

Thicknesser & Planer
Induction required. Never thickness pieces shorter than 300mm. Keep hands flat on the workpiece and clear of the infeed/outfeed rollers.

Band Saw
Induction required. Check blade tension before use. Use the fence or mitre gauge — never freehand cut on a band saw without experience.
🎯
Wood Lathe
Induction required. Always wear a face shield, not just glasses. Check workpiece is secure before switching on. Start at low speed.
🪛
Hand Tools
No induction required but ask if unsure. Keep chisels sharp — a blunt tool requires more force and is more likely to slip.
