Steam Bending Comes to the Shed

The KuShed workshop just got a new capability — and it’s one that opens up a whole new world of possibilities for members.

A New Tool for Shaping Wood

A steam box for steam-bending wood has been installed at the Shed, tucked neatly under the bench near the compressor. The steam generator — a wallpaper steamer — and drain are also installed under the bench.

The process works by softening the lignin in the wood. Lignin is the wood’s natural ‘glue’ that keeps the fibres together. Once softened by heat and moisture, timber becomes pliable enough to bend into curves that would be impossible to achieve any other way.

Beyond decorative pieces, steam bending opens up structural possibilities too — curved chair components, boat ribs, architectural elements. If you’ve got a project in mind that needs a curve, come and have a chat.

Proof in a Platter

To prove the concept, member Mike Levitan created a serving platter from different coloured strips of wood, bent using a sinusoidal jig, then glued together, run through the thicknesser, and finished with tung oil. The result is a striking, functional piece that demonstrates just what’s possible with the new equipment.
